Lockhart, Texas is a small town located in Hardin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The first settler in Lockhart was James Hargrave and his family who arrived in 1836. A post office called Lockhart was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1860, John Ladd bought land here and founded the town of Lockhart on what is now US-75 east of town. He named the community after General Sam Houston because he admired Houston's military career. In 1867, Ladd donated $5 to build a Methodist Episcopal church that would become known as First United Methodist Church of Lockhart (now First Baptist). John Ladd also built a home here which still stands today as one of the most impressive examples of architecture from this era in Hardin County. At one time it served as both a hotel and farmstead for many years. A new courthouse was built here between 1901 and 1903 by then-County Judge Wm Hargrave II with funds provided by Ladd himself. This courthouse became known as the old lockhart courthouse after its location within city limits made it difficult for officials to move when necessary; however, it still remains standing today and can be seen from US-75 just south of town. In 1907, attorney/builder J B Weldon laid out plans for what would become downtown Lockheart including a movie theater (the first such structure in Hardin County),a restaurant/bar (the hardness gymnasium),and several other businesses including two stores (now defunct) which were later leased to J C Gorman & Son Hardware store #1 on Main Street which still stands today at 705 W 5th St.; Gorman also operated #2 store before lease being terminated early 1960s behind High School building across street from current day bank building on 6th St., where current day grocery store now operates

By 1920, Lockhart had a population of around 1,500 people and was home to a variety of businesses including a grocery store, bank, post office, school district (now part of Kay County), and two newspapers - The Liberator and The Enterprise. In 1926, the original courthouse building burned down; however, new construction soon replaced it with a more modern structure which still stands today. During World War II Lockhart became one of the most heavily bombed areas in Texas because of its strategic importance as a supply point for military units fighting in Europe. However, despite the bombings that took place here during the war, little damage occurred to the town itself; instead many buildings were destroyed or damaged but still standing today. Following World War II Lockhart slowly lost its popularity as a farming community due to various factors such as improved transportation links available through Interstate 10 and other roads; however, it remains an important local center today with several businesses located within walking distance of each other.
