The Coast Guard has been a part of Longview since the early 1800s. The first unit in town was organized in 1877 and served until 1912. In 1951, the Texas Legislature designated Longview as its official port of entry. Since then, the Coast Guard has played an important role in our community by providing leadership and service to both locals and visitors. Today, the Coast Guard operates four patrol boats, two helicopters, a harbor defense vessel (HVD), and a wide variety of other equipment including rescue swimmer training vessels, lifeboats, identification systems, sonar technology and more. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the history of coast guard gift giving in Longview back to when it was started by the State Legislature. It will also cover some recent donations that have made contributions to our community.

In 1969, the Department of Homeland Security was created, which merged the Coast Guard with other federal agencies responsible for domestic security. Today, the Coast Guard provides essential homeland security services including patrolling our coastline, monitoring waterways and seaside communities, responding to emergencies involving boaters or fishermen, and conducting Search-And- Rescue operations when needed. Since its inception, the Coast Guardsmen have responded countless times to various emergencies including Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy; wildfires; earthquakes; bus accidents; suicides; protests; water main breaks; marine emergency events such as flash flooding or ice storms; terrorist attacks (such as September 11th); and more! These incidents have taught us much about coastal safety both from an operational standpoint and also through their human impact on our shorelines. One ofifacts from this history is what is now known as the "Gift History" of the Coast Guard. In 1847,Captain John Fitch donated land at Point Lookout in order to establish a coast guard station there. This marks one of the earliest gifts made by a US citizen to his government – it foreshadows today's importance of community support through donations towards homeland security efforts! Since then, many others have followed suit throughout America – each donation helping contribute towards current needs while also aiding in building future tradition within our country's Seaside Safety Program! Some examples include: USS Constitution Museum Foundation (1997), Ports Authority (2012), New York City Mayor Bloomberg Foundation (2013), & National Geographic Society (2015).
