Longview, Texas is a small town located in the state of Texas. It is bordered by Midland to the north and west, Lubbock to the east, and Amarillo to the south. The population of Longview was reported as 3,868 at the 2010 census. As of 2000, Longview was also home to East Fork Lake Park which includes a swimming pool and fishing ponds. The first permanent settler in what is now Longview was John Smedley who arrived in 1857. He named his new community after himself, "Long View". In 1861, George Hinton founded an agricultural colony called Gormanstown near present day Longview. Hinton hoped that this would be a crossroads for settlers looking for new land in central Texas. Unfortunately, this colony failed and all but one inhabitant left within two years. In 1872 Willard Richards began cattle drives from Fort Worth into central Texas on what became known as the Richards Trail. This trail provided access to many new areas for settlement and helped spur development in Longview over time. By 1915 LongView had become one of the most important communities in Eastern County due to its location near railroad lines and other resources which made it a gateway into Central Texas for businesses and residents alike. During World War II large sections of eastern Central Texas were destroyed by firebombing raids by Japanese forces during their bombing campaign against America's aircraft production plants (the B-29s). Many homes were destroyed or damaged; some remain standing today as reminders of how destructive these attacks could be.
