Lubbock, Texas was founded in 1863 by James F. Lubbock and his family. The city is located on the banks of the Arkansas River and was named for Lubbock, England. The first settlement in the area was made on a small island in the river, but it soon became apparent that this location would not work as a permanent settlement. So, in 1871, Lubbock began construction of what is now known as the Main Street Bridge. Construction continued until 1887 when it was finally destroyed by a flood.
