The city has since become one of its most important economic engines with a variety of businesses including manufacturing (+10% from 2009 to 2011), services (-1% from 2009 to 2011) and retail (+8% from 2009 to 2011). Today's economy centers around energy production (petroleum products and natural gas) as well as health care services related to agricultural practices such as farming ($2 billion annually), ranching ($2 billion annually), fishing ($3 billion annually), hunting/fishing ($3 billion annually) and tourism ( visitation up 7%,2011 estimate). Lubbock, Texas is a city in the United States located in Midland County. The population was 102,906 as of the 2010 census. Lubbock was founded on November 3, 1879 by James M. Chisholm and his wife, Evalyn Hildebrandt Chisholm. It became a town on December 1, 1903. The original town site was near present-day Dogpatch and South Third Street. On January 15, 1907 the town changed its name to Lubbock after Texas senator John Nance Garner who had helped tofound it and become its first mayor. The current incarnation of Lubbock began as a small farming community with a population of 2,500 people in 1909 before becoming an industrial center during World War I with heavy production of munitions plants such as Hecht Manufacturing Company (now Schlumberger) and American Arms Corporation (now Smith & Wesson). After the war ended the city exploded with new development including educational institutions such as Lamar University and Southern Methodist University; professional football teams such as the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers; major housing developments such as Green Oaks Shopping Center and White Sands Resort & Casino; and major industry including oil production at Anheuser Busch Brewing Company (later Budweiser) from 1947 until 2011. Today Lubbock continues to grow through annexation by neighboring cities along Interstate 40 including Odessa in 2009, Midland in 2002, Robstown in 1999, Angelo in 1995 and Wilbarger in 1991.
