Lumberton, Texas is a town in Webster County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is located on the Brazos River. The first settler in Lumberton was James Hargrave in 1878. In 1902, George Garland built the first store and post office in Lumberton. For many years it served as the only stop on the Brazos River before it was replaced by Interstate Highway 10. In 1928, General Store Co., which had been opened by J.H. Garland three years earlier, became Zephyrhills Cigar & Tobacco Corp., becoming one of the largest cigar companies in Texas until its annexation by Philip Morris Incorporated in 1985. By 1930, most of what is now Webster County had been populated and there were few towns other than Lumberton with over 1,000 residents when Sam Houston National Forest was created west of town along the Brazos River floodplain to provide cheap land for ranching and timber production during World War II. In 1951-1952 a large campaign to build a bridge across the river began to gain attention from locals and outside sources as transportation options for people living downstream from Fort Worth increased; later that year construction began on both southbound I-10 bypasses (the present-day Parker Road Bridge) and northbound I-10 (the present day Lake FM Boulevard).
