Lumberton, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Lumberton is bordered by Garland to the north, Arlington to the east, Mesquite to the south and west and Palestine to the northwest. The local government is made up of a Mayor and a City Council with five members each. The first settler in Lumberton was James Higgs who arrived in 1849 from Kentucky on his horse Honest John. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Higgs' Landing." In 1850, he married Anna Fields and they had six children: Lydia (1851-1937), James (1853-1938), Emma (1855-1948), John A (1857-1946), Charles Fayette Higgs (1859-1950) and Vida Josepha Higgs (1861-1945). In 1872, Jno Fields bought 640 acres at what's now 165th Street between Elmwood Drive and Sawmill Road from Levi Slaughter for $1/acre price which he later increased to $2/acre when he subdivided it into blocks of 20 acres each in 1880! In 1881, Jacob Bigham came to Lumberton from Missouri on horseback with an idea for establishing a grain elevator that would bring corn directly from Kansas City for export across America. When Bigham got there he found no one around so he started building himself an elevator out of logs - something unheard of at that time! After about 10 months construction began on what became known as "Bigham's Mill" or simply "The Mill". By 1884, lumber had been shipped down from Kansas City in truckloads all season long so much demand existed for logs that prices went up slightly but overall lumber prices stayed high because transportation costs were high back then! That same year saw another milestone when TheMill produced its first barrel of oil! The early days were tough times for business as log shipping stopped because there was no other way to get those big logs out there other than by boat or train but things changed with the invention of automobiles which made transport possible once again! In 1916 TheMill output increased by 50% due entirely to World War I Output soared thanks largely to new technology being developed at that time called synthetic rubber
