The Lumberton National Guard was organized on November 1, 1917. It was the result of a merger of the local militia and the Texas National Guard in 1916. At its creation, it consisted of 128Volunteer soldiers and police officers from Lumberton and neighboring towns in East Texas. The first commanders were Major General James S. Hogg (commanding officer) and Lieutenant Colonel George W. Barnes (vice colonel). On December 15, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson ordered that all volunteer units be disbanded as part of his war effort until further notice. With no other troops available to help protect American nationals in Texas, the Lumberton National Guard was dissolved on January 2, 1918. Though disbandment may have been somewhat expected given the number of volunteers only numbering 128 members at its inception, this action by president Wilson marks the beginning of a long history for the national guard in Lumberton – one that includes both good times as well as bad times. In 1951, when martial law was declared following an attempted riot by citizens over federal funding cuts for state government programs, local businesses filed suit against the national guard accusing them of being un-American and anti-government; this case led to what is now known as "The Battle of Lumberton." In response to this fight between local business interests and military forces occupying their town square during what is now commonly referred to as "the low point" for local economy during this time period,Lumbertthe NGF upped its game by forminga truckers battalion which patrolled highways near town looking for troublemakers; this unit later became known as The Ranger Battalion. In 1969–1970 during what is now called "the oil crisis," patriotic citizens across town collected supplies needed for community defense such as gas masks and weapons from army ordnance stores located within easy walking distance of their homes; these items were delivered directly to your home or store if you had one! This event came about due to a donation drive organized by civic leaders spearheaded by Mayor Vernon Buchanan who asked residents how they could contribute without having anything negative happen attached thereto such as looting or damage occurring?
