The present name for the town was given to it by cattleman W M C Marshall after he donated land to form the settlement. In 1934, a cotton gin and sowing ground were built within what is now Marshalls Town Park. That same year, a new high school opened its doors in Marshalltown and became one of the largest public schools in Amarillo County. In 1951,Marshall logged over 1 million acres (0 hectare) of cotton production! The plant closed operations in 1978 but left behind a legacy that still stands today - an award-winning cotton crop management program which has been used by many other growers throughout history

Marshall’s economy soared during World War I as a result of the military presence in the area; during that time, it produced much food that was used to feed troops stationed in nearby Fort Worth and other nearby towns. After World War I ended, Marshall began to decline as a result of technological advancements and changes in American life. However, through hard work and determination, the town has bounced back several times since then and continues to thrive today. In addition to its economic importance, Marshall is also known for its history – including its role as the home town for General James S. Forrest during his Battle of Buffalo Gap campaign against Mexican forces in 1901-1902. Additionally, it is also home to several important historical sites such as FM 1960 (a highway that runs through Marshall), Forrest House Museum (an historic house which once served as an office for Marshal residents), and Commerce Street Baptist Church (which is one of only three churches remaining from early Marshalls).
Marshall was founded by David Marshall in 1837. The town was named after the Battle of Marshall on November 5, 1836. The first post office was established in Marshall in 1839. It was renamed to its current name in 1865. In 1902, Marshal had a population of 1,200 and a school which served children from birth to age 16.
