The United States Air Force has a rich history in Mcallen, Texas. The USAF main base is located in the city, and the air force has been stationed there since World War II. In 1947, the USAF created the Air Defense Command (ADC) in Mcallen to provide missile defense for Texans. ADC was later renamed Aerospace Forces Command (AFC) and currently oversees all USAAF activities worldwide. On July 20th, 1955, President Dwight Eisenhower signed into law the National Security Act of 1953 which created the Central Intelligence Agency as a separate branch of government within DOD. The USAF was given responsibility for providing security for American embassies around the world. On November 1st, 1961 – just two years after ADC was established – General Curtis LeMay announced that US Strategic Air Command would be establishing a new wing called Operation Northwoods which aimed to kidnap leaders of Cuba and other countries considered enemies of America. This event is generally recognized as being one of the reasons why JFK was elected president in 1960 despite having no military experience! In 1970-71, AFB Mcallen played an important role when it became home to two major deployments during Operation Neptune's Spear – Desert Storm and Gulf War I. Initially based at Tan Son Nhut AB on Thailand's border with Laos, units from AFMcAllen participated in operations scattered throughout Southwest Asia support UH-1 Huey helicopters flying search and rescue missions; supply evacuations; ground forces engaged enemy positions; medical evacuations; suppression of fires; and destruction or damage to enemy targets. These deployments were soon followed by deployments to Saudi Arabia (Operation Provide Comfort), Panama (Operation Just Cause), Yugoslavia (Operation Joint Endeavor), Haiti (Operation Rescue), Somalia (Operation Restore Hope), Bosnia/Herzegovina/Croatia - Operation Slobodan Milosevic - Task Force Alpha - Task Force Beta - Battle Group cynosure Point Bravo Team 2nd Lt Carlos Guevara AFMcALLEN also participated extensively in Desert Shield/Desert Storm operations which took place between August 1990-January 1991 near Baghdad Airport on Iraq's side of Kuwait City using AH-64 Apache helicopters gunships conducting airstrikes against Republican Guard command posts and fuel caches thought to be used by Iraqi troops

In 1949, Mcallen was reestablished as an unauthorized city in southeastern Texas after a request from then-Governor John Connally. At its height, Mcallen had a population of 30,000 people and was considered one of the most important cities in southeastern Texas. However, following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and various economic difficulties throughout that decade, Mcallen's population fell below 10,000 residents by 2009. Today, Mcallen is known for its small size but rich culture and history. It is home to several cultural attractions such as the Museum of Art & History (MOA), which opened in 1978; Sadler’s Wells Theatre; and The Cemetery at Elmwood Park. Additionally, there are many small businesses located within blocks of downtown which make it an attractive place to live or work.

By 1870, Mcallen had a population of 1,200 people. A year later, it had grown to 3,000 and by 1900 it had reached 10,000 people. In 1907, the state legislature renamed the town for General John Pershing because he had fought in Mexico's war against Spanish forces.
