The Navy has a long and proud history in Mcallen, Texas. The city was first founded by the Spanish in 1836 as Penal Colony of San Antonio de Bexar, after the Alamo battle. The original Naval Base was built on what is now Main Street, just north of the current Naval Annex. In 1942, General Douglas MacArthur's army landed here to help defeat Japan during World War II. Today, naval personnel from all over the United States come to Mcallen for training and education at USS Midway National Museum and Maritime Park. The planes were gifted free of charge to Prime Minister Clement Attlee's new Labour Government during its first term in office. The following year saw another significant donation when $3 million was donated by General Electric Co., Incorporated to support technology research at MIT Lincoln Laboratory on Long Island City, New York - this would later become Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory - in honor of Admiral Chester Nimitz whose name is associated with that lab today. In 1950s and 1960s gifts included radios and TVs; jet aircraft; submarines; warships; plants; educational materials such as textbooks and teaching tools; luxury cars such as Rolls-Royces or Ferraris;; cowboy hats and boots;; ornamentation such as medals ornaments.; money orders or checks for caddies at golf tournaments.; uniforms for enlisted personnel.; snacks like candy bars or peanuts

The town of Mcallen, Texas was founded in 1836 on the banks of the Rio Grande by General Zachary Taylor and his army. The name “Mcallen” is from the Mexican word meaning “small stream.” The town grew rapidly after it was seconded to Austin as the capital of Texas in 1845. In 1847, Mcallen became a county seat and then a city in 1870. The population of Mcallen peaked at over 100,000 in 1920 but has decreased since then. Many people who live in Mcallen are descendants of those that founded the community. The history of Mcallen began with its location on the bank of the Rio Grande. When General Travis established himself at San Antonio in 1836, he ordered his soldiers to build a fort there to protect him from hostile Indians. He also ordered that an annual fair be held near present day McALLEN so goods and materials could be traded between Texans and Mexico. The first fair was held on April 14, 1837, and attracted over 50 traders from all over North America including Englishmen James Fenton and John Lubbock as well as Mexicans such as Santiago Castro and Jesús Gomez de la Rivera. It wasn’t until 1840 that Colonel David Neely decided to build a bridge across the river for transportation purposes which made goods moving between Austin and Mexico much easier than before. This Bridge helped make annexation possible for Texas which occurred on February 2, 1846 when President Polk signed Executive Order No 3 implementing Annexation into United States Constitution under Article 1 Section 8 Clause 5 .
