Mcallen, Texas is a city located in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Williamson County and home to Baylor University. The first settlers in what is now Mcallen arrived in 1835 from Kentucky. They named their town after General James Bowie, who had fought against Spanish forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1839, the settlement was renamed for American Revolutionary War general Robert McAllin after he helped lead an attack on a Spanish military post near modern-day Reynosa, Mexico. After independence was gained from Spain in 1821, Mexican citizens began moving into east Texas and established towns and villages along the Rio Grande River. The first permanent Anglo-American settler in what is now Mcallen was John Silliman in 1840. He founded a cotton plantation called Jourdan that became one of the largest cotton plantations in East Texas. Silliman also built a gristmill and store near present day Loop 610 South which served as the starting point for many later entrepreneurs and residents including Cyrus McCormick & Co.,pine family ranching operations (the Pine family were among America's first ranchers), oil exploration by George Wickersham (Wickersham Oil Company), Panchero Independent School District No..4 (now part of Round Rock ISD) and Bob Henson'sMr.(now KFC) restaurant chain which opened its first location here in 1941). In 1865, cattle rustlers Harry Parsons and Jesse Benton came through Williamson County looking for stock to drive out of range of mounted cavalry patrols being carried out by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to suppress lawlessness throughout Central Texas while he campaigned against Ulysses S Grant's army across Mexico City; they entered Roanoke Valley on July 9th with 100 head of beef cattle before being driven off by local farmers who furnished them with horses and food until they reached Austin about two weeks later whereupon they made their escape back overland to Mexico City under cover of darkness without having killed any people or property On Decatur Boulevard stands today's old courthouse complex completed by architect Alfred Burchfield between 1915-16 as one example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture popularized during World War I By 1930 there were over 50 businesses operating within blocks radius of downtown Mcallen - still an active business district today

The history of Mcallen, Texas stretches back to the early 1800s. The area that now includes Mcallen was first settled by Anglo-Mexican settlers in the late 18th century. In 1836, Mexico achieved its independence from Spain and formed its own government, which named the area El Paso del Norte. The region became a hotbed of political activity as various Mexican factions fought for control over the area. By 1860, most of El Paso del Norte had been annexed to Texas and the name changed to Mcallen. Mcallen grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its natural resources and strategic location. By 1870, it had become one of the largest towns in Texas with a population of around 10,000 people. It remained an important center for commerce and industry until after World War II when it began to decline economically. Today, Mcallen is primarily a residential community with limited commercial or industrial activity located within its boundaries.
Mcallen is a small town in the Midland County seat of Hidalgo. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on US-80 east of Austin, Texas. The community began as a cattle rancho in 1876 and grew rapidly with the arrival of railroads in the early 20th century. The city proper was founded by immigrants from Mexico in 1902 and quickly became known for its annual Fiesta de las Flores, or Flower Festival. By 1920, Mcallen had over 1,500 residents and was one of the largest communities in Texas outsideDallas/Fort Worth. In 1944, during World War II, local men helped build Fort Sam Houston State Park adjacent to the town; this contributed to its nickname "Humble Fort". In 1948, after passage of State law allowing voting by mail (instead of individual polling places), Mcallen voted overwhelmingly for Lyndon B Johnson in his presidential election victory over Richard Nixon. As part of Johnson's New Frontier Agenda, he made significant investments in education including building new schools and expanding school districts withinMidland County. These efforts led to increased prosperity for Mcallen through decades into the 21st century. In 2000, following 9/11 terrorist attacks which destroyed much of New York City and left many victims living near Ground Zero,[1]Mcallen established itself as an active center for safety and security activity with events like a "9/11ribute night" being held regularly throughout 2001–present.[2][3] In recent years there has been an increase towards economic development leading to more downtown businesses opened up along with an Increase in job opportunities overall since 2009.[4]
