Mcallen is a town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the border of Webb County and Hidalgo County. As of 2010, it had a population of 18,569. Mcallen is the county seat for Hidalgo County. The name "Mcallen" was given to the community by General Sam Houston in 1836 during his campaigns against Mexican forces in what is now Webb County. In 1863, cattle rancher John Witherspoon founded what would become known as McAllen University after donating land to the school board for that purpose. In 1907, J B Stuart Foods moved its corporate headquarters from El Paso to McAllen and established a research and development center there which remains today one of the largest food companies in Texas. In 1956, McAllen became home to Baylor University's first veterinary school when it merged with Dallas Veterinary Medical School (DVM). Mcallen is a city in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first white settlers in what is now Mcallen were Calumet and Lillie Hennepin families who arrived from Illinois in 1836. They erected a cabin on the east bank of the White River about two miles south of present-day Mcallen. On November 12, 1836, Governor Andrew Jackson certified to the Legislature that $10,000 had been raised by lottery for the purchase of land east of Houston and west of San Antonio for public school purposes. The General Land Office authorized John Sweeny to sell 640 acres (2 km²) along Trinity River northwest of present-day Mcallen for $5 per acre ($/ha). This grant became known as Rancho de las Flores (Rancho Fresnillo). In 1839,Captain James Kenedy built his first post office at what is now downtown Mcallen. In 1840 Captain Kenedy sold his post office to Aisen & Co., a store and banking firm which later became Farmers Trust Company. Captain Kenedy's heirs continue to hold title to it until 1920 when it passed through ownership multiple times before being bought by Pemberton family members in 1936 and renamed Pemberton Place after them. In 1849 Drury transferred 1,500 acres (50 km²) into Brazos County from Harris County so that Brazos County could have more land to offer its citizens free or discounted passage through its territory on riverboats provided they participated in government surveys and paid taxes amounting to 10% or more of their value respectively assessed against their property values . Although not all Brazosians took advantage of this offer and many chose instead to purchase land outside the county limits – such as those located near Clear Fork Reservoir – by 1860 most residents within the county limits had either moved away or become farmers or ranch hands working on large tracts purchased from Mexican landowners east of Houston . Anglo residential development within McLennan boundaries started slowly with some construction taking place around 1890 but accelerated dramatically during World War I when blacks enlisted in military servicechu
