Mckinney is a city in Baylor County, Texas, United States. The population was 102,314 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-most populous municipality in Texas and the second-largest city in Baylor County after Wichita Falls. The city is named for James McKinney, who donated land to Baylor University and founded the town on what is now downtown. The area that would become Mckinney was first settled by people who were migrating from Tennessee in 1827. They called their new community "Fayetteville". In 1848, General Sam Houston's army passed through Fayetteville on its way to battle with Mexican forces near San Antonio. A contingent of Houston's men stopped at Fayetteville for dinner and Dinner Lady Sarah McKinney cooked up a storm while they were eating. After they finished their meal she set up her tent and entertained them with music until midnight before continuing to sing into the early hours of the morning. This event became known as "Dinner Lady Sarah McKinney's nightingale" or "The midnight concert". In 1865, John Wesley Hardeman donated land to Baylor University which then grew into one of America’s largest universities with over 60 colleges and universities affiliated with it including Rice University (now Rice University System), Southern Methodist University (today SMU), UT Austin, Incarnate Word College (IWC) and Dallas Baptist University (later Baptist Bible Institute). As these institutions evolved so too did Mckinney; from a small agricultural community with only 1 store in 1870 to an industrial center by 1910 when it had 12 businesses employing 100 workers. Mckinney, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of McKinney County. The population was 2,815 at the 2010 census. It is located in Mid-Texan region on the edge of Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The site of ancient Timucua culture villages has been identified as McKinney Historic District since 1935. In 1881, when Fayetteville and other small settlements were founded in what is now McKinney County, they built their homes near East Fork Creek on land that would become part of McKinney today. The first post office in this area was established in 1887, and by 1899 there were five townships within McKinney County: Denton Township (northwest corner), Haltom Township (southwest corner), Willacy Township (east side), Nacogdoches Township (northeast corner) and Vernon Township (southeast corner). By 1901 all but one had been organized into boroughs: Arlington Heights with a population of 1,500; Commerce with a population of 1,600; Farmers Branch with a population of 2,100; Fenwick with a population of 2,200; Grand Prairie with a population of 3,000; Hill Country Village with a population of 4,000; and Hebron with a population of 5,000. On July 10th 1904 the last inhabitants left Haltom Township for good when it became part to Arlington Heights Borough. The only remaining community from that time until annexation by Arlington Heights was Glenpool which had about 500 residents at its peak in 1936 before becoming an annexed town too
