Mercedes, Texas is a small town in southeastern Texas. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community was founded by German immigrants in 1881 and named after King George III of England. Mercedes was first platted in 1902, when two brothers built a sawmill on the banks of the Brazos River. The mill burned down in 1912 but was rebuilt and operated until 1954. In 1958, Mercedes incorporated as a village under the name of Monterrey. In 1974, it changed its name to Mercedes because Austin became populous enough that it conflicted with Monterrey's original Spanish name for "Mexico." The community has experienced steady growth since its incorporation; during the 1990s, it had an estimated population of 20 to 25 percent more than when it begannings as a Village. In 2002, Mercedes voters passed an ordinance establishing itself as an independently run school district which has led to increased educational opportunities and economic development for the townspeople. Today’s Mercedes is home to over 90 businesses and services including several banking institutions (First National Bank & Trust Company, Citizens Bank & Trust Company), medical clinics (Auromere Medical Clinic Inc., Methodist General Hospital), restaurants (Casa Grande Mexican restaurant chain), three shopping malls (Tylertown Center mall, West Side Mallplex shopping center and Midtown mall), two golf courses (Mercedes Golf Course Association) and one professional sports team - the Texans football team - which plays its home games at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Mercedes, TX is a town in Parker County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Mexicans who were driven out of their homes during the Mexican-American War. The first white settlers arrived in 1872 and named it Mercedes after Lewis and Clark's wagon train. The town came to prominence for its lead mines, which produced significant amounts of lead until the early 20th century. From 1897 to 1912, Mercedes had its own bank and provided banking services to other small towns in that area. In 1907, the town became the site of the world's first oil well stimulation boom when a company called Texaco drilled an oil well near present-day FM 527 and US Highway 281. In 1992, Mercedes voted to become an independent city within Parker County; however, it remains part of downtown Dallas as its political boundaries have not changed since then. As one of just 10 Texas cities with a population over 100,000 residents (the others are Austin (2255), Irving (2112), Plano (2087), Garland (1944), Frisco (1898), Waco (1937) and Amarillo (1966)), Mercedes has been influential throughout its history both locally and statewide.
