The National Guard in Mercedes, Texas has been a part of the community since the early 1900s. The unit was first organized on December 1st, 1914 as the Second Battalion of the Texas Rangers. The battalion was disbanded in 1916, but was reactivated on October 3rd, 1917 as Company D of the Texas National Guard. The company served in World War I and World War II before disbanding again on September 30th, 1946. In 1947, the First Battalion of the Texas Rangers was reactivated as Company A and served until it was disbanded effective September 30th, 1951. In 1959, Company B of the Texas Ranger became a separate unit and also served until it disbanded on November 15th, 1961. The Third Battalion of the Texas Rangers which is still active today became a part of Company A on October 3rd, 1964 and has continued to serve ever since. On July 10th, 1978 Captain John Waddell Jr., Commandant for Reserve Components (VC) activated Company C fromactive duty status at Fort Worth Army Air Station with headquarters located at Lufkin Army Depot where they had been working under lease from then-Lufkin Municipal Airport Authority Incorporated (Lamark Airlines). On August 22nd Companies D-1 thru D-3 were activated from inactive duty status at Lufkin Air Force Base with Headquarters located at San Antonio Army Medical Center where they had been working under lease from then-San Antonio Municipal Airport Authority Incorporated (SAMA Airlines). The first battalion of the 1st Texas Infantry was organized in 1848 and served from1849-1851. In 1861, the state seceded from the United States and formed their own country, Confederate States of America. During the Civil War, units of the 1st Texas Infantry were mobilized and fought in many battles including Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Shiloh. After the war ended in 1865, most of these units withdrew to Missouri but a few remain here today as part of the National Guard Bureau’s (NGB) Mercedes detachment.

The history of Mercedes, Texas begins with the arrival of Spanish traders in the area in the late 18th century. The region was originally inhabited by the Wichita people, and as early as 1795, Spanish maps showed what is now Mercedes County on their territory. By 1821, Mexican settlers had arrived in droves, and by 1830, there were over 100 Anglo-American families living in what is now Mercedes County. Railroads first reached this area during the mid-19th century when a segment of the Santa Fe Railway ran through present day Houston and Eastland counties. In 1876, a group of businessmen led by John Lovett bought land near present day Uptown for a railroad station. This location would later become known as Junction City. In 1893, two brothers named Harry and Frank Norris purchased 1/4 acre (0.18 km2) of land northeast of Junction City from James Sweeny for $10 ($100 today). They renamed it “Mercedes” after their mother’s birthplace – Merkel Germany – which they had visited while living in Chicago Heights., Illinois. The original home at 7609 FM 528 became an agricultural center that hosted many cattle drives before becoming a bedroom community for Houstonians during World War II. After 1945, it experienced rapid growth as a result of subdivisions and residential development within Highway 281 boundaries west of town along Interstate 10 until its demolition in 1977 to make way for new Interstate 10 freeway construction east of town
The town of Mercedes, Texas was founded in 1892 by Captain John A. Jenkins and his family. The community grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in nearby Fort Worth, and by 1912 it had a population of over 500 people. In 1924, the city charter was passed which granted Mercedes city status. The City Council established a library, fire hall, and school system within the limits of the city. In 1961, Houston annexed parts of neighboring Parker County to formHouston Heights. As a result of this annexation, not only did Mercedes lose its local government status but it also lost all its streetlights and plumbing services.
