Mercedes, Texas is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. The community of Mercedes was founded in 1872 by Scots-Irish immigrants. It was named for Prince Wilhelm and Crown Princess Augusta of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who were residents of nearby Waco at the time. The first post office in Mercedes opened on July 24, 1875. The name "Mercedes" came from the French word "mère de France," meaning mother of France or queen of France. At its peak as a small farming community with only 164 inhabitants in 1920, Mercedes had an mail service and boasted one school and two churches. However, by 1930 the population had dwindled to just 802 people due to waves of Mexican migration to the area after General Antonio López Santa Anna's defeat during the Mexican Revolution (1846-48). In 1954 when Interstate 55 was built through Collin County, southeastern Texans saw their opportunity to build a new town on what would become I-55 northward. When it became clear that this would be an important regional center for highway development, most local businesses abandoned their downtowns and relocated to rural areas near I-55; however, few residents left Mercedes behind. In 1984 Mercedes incorporated as a town under Suburban Town laws which allowed for more independent growth than Undertown Laws which governed towns smaller than 10 000 people; consequently most retail stores are located outside of town limits today while almost all residential units are within walking distance from commercial areas including restaurants and shops operated by other townsmen or citizens not associated with Mercedes proper
