The Air Force deployed a gift history in Mesquite, Texas on Dec. 8, 1951. The gift was transportation of an F-84 jet fighter to the United Kingdom for RAF operations. The RAF operation was called "Operation Snowy." The purpose of the airlift was to provide air cover for British Prime Minister Clement Attlee's visit to the United States that winter. The gift was given by Capt. Hap Arnold, commander of Air Forces Europe and Commanderidal Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (COMAEEF). Arnold also served as honorary general manager of the RAF's London-based European airline, British Airways Limited (BA). In addition to its military function, Operation Snowy also served as a marketing coup for BA; it became the first international airline to receive an order from NATO nations for new types of aircraft. From then on, all AAF deployments would include at least one gift item. In 1945, when the AAF was disbanded and merged into the USAF, it continued to send gifts on behalf of its members in Europe and Asia. These deployments also included providing logistical support for NATO operations. During these years, commanders in each theatre maintained control over what items their troops received as gifts from the United States Air Force. From 1947 until 1949, when Gift Command was established within Headquarters USAF to manage all USAAF gifting activities worldwide, Gifts were sent direct from Headquarters USAF to units located in Europe and Asia via airmail only. This system allowed for more personalization and convenience for recipients; however it did not allow for simultaneous sending of multiple types of gifts (e.g., clothing or stationery). Since 1954, when Gift Command began accepting electronic orders through Fed Ex®, all USAAF deployments have included either an electronic or physical gift card option which can be customized with any participating airline/travel company information including itinerary details and photograph(s). This allows participants maximum flexibility while traveling without having to worry about spoilage or lost packages while overseas. Additionally, this system provides accountability by allowing commanders at each theater level access to tracking data so that they can make informed decisions about how bestto spend their donation funds
