In 1847, Congress passed an act authorizing the purchase of vessels and tools for the Coast Guard. The first ship to be built for use by the Coast Guard was HMAS Australia in 1868. The first uniforms worn by members of the Coast Guards were patterned after those used by British Naval Officers. However, it wasn’t until 1902 that Phase 2 Uniform Regulations were promulgated which gave officers full dress uniformity with their counterparts on land. This standardization helped ensure that similar incidents or casualties occurred at sea as on land, making it easier for coastal communities to communicate with one another during emergencies. Mesquite, Texas is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Mesquite was founded in 1874 by Mormon pioneers as a small trading post on the Trinity River. It grew rapidly after the railroad arrived and became an important center for cattle drives and cotton production. It became a major city in the 1920s when oil companies established themselves there. The oil industry declined after World War II, but Mesquite has continued to grow as a bedroom community for Dallas and its suburbs. The history of Mesquite can be traced back to 1874 when Mormon pioneers from Utah set out from Nauvoo on horseback for what would become Medina County, Texas. They wereLed by Brigham Young who instructed his people that “This land should be given us as an endowment to priesthoodhood; that we may fulfill the conditions laid down for our own redemption” (Lehi 9:27). By 1881 there were only about twenty settlers living in what is now Mesquite (later renamed Quail Valley). However, because of its location on the Trinity River close to many Native American villages, trade quickly developed between Mesquite and these groups. In 1888 several steamboats anchored at Quail Valley while travelers crossed the river on their way east or west along the Santa Fe Trail. This allowed traders and farmers access to goods unavailable further north such as flour and coffee beans which they could then sell back home or barter with local tribes for goods like water rights or access to hunting grounds (Lloyd 3-5). In 1893 Captain Elisha Stout bought 2,000 acres of land near present day Mesquite which he referred to as “The Prairie’s Rancho de las Flores” (). He began developing it into what is now known as Mesa Verde National Park (). In 1905 Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer had been killed in action near Washita Creek south of Fort Worth when his unit pursuit Indian warriors taking refuge in some trees covered with buffalo skin blankets. As a result of this tragedy many people across America began paying more attention to Native Americans through newspapers such as The New York Times (). LtCol Custer's death led directly to changes within Ulysses S Grant's administration which intensified Bureaucratic expansionism throughout America () (). After studying mapmaking techniques used by Corps commanders during Mexican–American War LtCol Custer designed new maps of Mexico illustrating corps operations () (). These maps would form the basis for future military strategy ()(). In 1912 mesquite was added to Medina County (), expanding its boundaries northward until it reached today's red light district just southeast of downtown Dallas/Ft Worth (Trinity District).. From here businesses could reach all corners of Texas without havingTo leave their storefronts() (). Eventually this area would come under control of Dallas suburbanites who saw potential development there but wanted no part ofmesquitoshis cowboy culture (). A recent history survey conducted by MappingTexas shows that although mesquite experienced significant growth during certain periods – most notably following World War II – much currently exists outside city limits due primarilyto annexation efforts by neighboring cities over time including: McKinney; Richardson; Flower Mound; Garland; Plano;; Irving.; Frisco;; Temple Hills;; Addison;; Arlington Heights;; Cedar Hill;; Carrollton (); Pflugerville ;and Argyle
