Mesquite is located on the eastern edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and its boundaries are Elm Street to the north, State Highway 377 to the east, and Brush Creek to the south. Mesquite's history began with Mexico City's arrival in 1824 when General Antonio López de Santa Anna set out from Tampico on horseback for San Antonio with orders to conquer Texan soil. A local rancher by the name of José Ortiz established trade relations with Mexico City in 1828 and soon learned that Santa Anna wanted land near Houston because he thought it would be easier to control American settlers there than inTexas' open prairies where Indian attacks occurred regularly. Ortiz offered his acreage for $1 per head (or three dollars each) so Santa Anna ordered Ortiz killed as part of his strategy to gain favor with Ulysses S. Grant after his successful seizure of Washington D.C., which demonstrated Spanish weakness vis-à-vis America proper—a tactic known as "The Insurrection."
