Airforce Gift History in Mineral Wells, Texas began with the donation of a Boeing 727 to the town on December 1, 1944. The gift was made possible by the United States Air Force’s Eighth Air Force, which had been activated in 1942 and was based at Travis AFB in Austin. The squadron had been formed from elements of the Ninth Air Force, which patrolled over Texas during World War II. The Boeing 727 served as the squadron’s primary transport aircraft until it was replaced by the Boeing 757 in 1968. It is still used today by Eighth Air Force personnel stationed at Andrews AFB in Maryland. In addition to its RAF roots, Eighth Air Force also donated two Lockheed L-949 Constellations to Mineral Wells Airport in 1956 and 1959. These planes were used for air traffic control and remained parked there until they were sold to Mineral Wells Municipal Airport in 1984. Since its inception, the USAAF has donated more than 50 aircraft and equipment to Mineral Wells Municipal Airport. Some of these donations have included: a McDonnell Douglas DC-8 cargo plane (1962), an F-4 Phantom II fighter jet (1965), an A-6 Intruder antisubmarine warfare aircraft (1972), a Beechcraft Baron turboprop airliner (1978), a KC-135 Stratotanker tanker (1983), and an Alenia Aeronautica CN235 transport helicopter(1985). In addition, several military installations have also benefitted from contributions from Eighth Air Force personnel: Travis AFB became home to First Flight Test Range after it was transferred from Holloman AFB; Fairchild AFB housed operational units of Seventh Fleet; Hillman AFB became home to Headquarters USAF Operation Command after Commander USAF Southwest Pacific Area moved there; Wright-Patterson AFB became home to Tactical Missile Wing after it was transferred from Pease AFB; Randolph AFB served as Army Postgraduate School while Seymour Johnson Island hosted Marine Corps Weapons Development Command; Davis–Monthan AFB became home to Headquarters US Forces Europe when that command relocated from Pope Field NAVY]; each installation has received various types of equipment, including barracks, hangars, airstrips/terminals, storage areas/facilities., Technical Training Unit – 8th TCU received their first Cessna 182A trainer kit in 1978.; all this work culminated with Howland AFB becoming one of only three installations worldwide recipient of an entire B737 family kit set for conversion into full flyable status on October 15th 1992.] Eighth Air Force Museum collection includes Lockheed L-949 Constellation donor airplane 1956 - 1959 On December 1st 1944 a Boeing 727 arrived at Mineral Wells Municipal Airport with gifts from both the United States Airforce's Eighth AirForce and RAF England's Second Tactical Squadron! The Texas Air National Guard's 241st Fighter Wing donated an F-16 Fighting Falcon to the Mineral Wells Municipal Airport in 2007. The wing also donated a KC-135 Stratotanker to the airport in 2013.
Mineral Wells is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. Mineral Wells was founded in 1876 by parents of early settlers J.D. and Fannie Smith. The Mineral Wells community in south Texas was founded by Anglo-Americans in 1849. The town developed around a salt mine, which became the most important source of income for the community. The Salt Mine and Railroad Company was organized in 1851, and began exporting salt to Europe. The company also built a mill that processed flour from local sandstone. In 1861, the company merged with the Houston & Texas Railway Company to form the Houston & Texas Railway Company Ltd., which became part of Gulf Corp. In 1907, GulfCorp was acquired by Standard Oil of New Jersey. After World War II, Mineral Wells experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center. Growth led to development of shopping malls and other commercial areas within the community. Today, Mineral Wells retains its rural character and is known for its wide variety of cultural experiences, including art galleries, museums, libraries, and restaurants.
