Mission, Texas is a small town located in the Mexican state of Bexar. The town was founded in 1846 by Father Miguel de la Encarnación and Brother Antonio Valero as a mission to convert the Indian population to Christianity. The mission was abandoned in 1853 and the area became part of Mexico City. The first settlers in Mission were José Gomez and his wife Juana who arrived from Guanajuato on July 12, 1846. José had been recommended by Father Miguel de la Encarnación as someone with the ability to preach baptism freedoms for all Indians. They also brought along their three children Josefina, Vicente, and Carmen. Most of these early settlers were farmers who began planting crops near what is now Mission Creek Boulevard. A few years later, after José's death, his wife Juana took over farming operations and continued to raise families until her death in 1895. In 1851, Francisco Pérez arrived from Zulia province with his family and started a store next door to José Gomez's grocery store which would become one of Bexar's most successful businesses. In 1863, Antonio Valero came to Mission from San Luis Potosí province with his family and started a school which would be one of the longest running schools in Bexar County history. In 1865 Juanita García married Francisco Martinez whose family owned land adjoining Josefina Gomez's farm just east of present daymission creek Boulevard intersection Josefina Gomez died soon after giving birth to her fourth child Manuela on October 9th 1865 at age 36 dueto complications during delivery natural disasters missionaries called upon them during this time period frequently such as floods that swept through various parts of Mexico including Mission Iturbide saws cut into xml trees limbs so water could flow through) it is said that she used this occasion as an opportunity for fasting so that she might manifest some divine power healing her own son Manuela) . Even though Mexico had become an independent nation by 1821 – following centuries of Spanish rule – Anglo entrepreneurs continued to seek opportunities abroad for their businesses. One example was Nathaniel Bock’s importation company which attempted to establish connections with British traders throughout Central America before sailing downriver to Veracruz en route to California via Acapulco (1824). These endeavors provided early evidence that Mexico could be opened up as business opportunity rather than stagnant territory ruled by czarism or Spanish viceroyalty
