Missouri City is a city in Texas, founded in 1879 by the merger of two small villages, Independence and Parkerville. It became the largest town in Texas when it was incorporated as a city on December 12, 1912. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 census. A major industry in the city is oil and gas production. The name "Missouri City" comes from an incident which occurred there on October 22nd of that year when Mexican soldiers were attacking American settlers. The town's citizens had rallied to help defend their brothers and sisters in arms and they managed to drive out the Mexican attackers with only a few casualties on their side. This event has been immortalized in local lore as "the Battle of Missouri City". In 1879, two small villages merged to form what would become Missouri City: Independence (population 1,500) and Parkerville (population 350). In 1912, after years of planning by city fathers John Paddock and Fred Bizuka, Independence was annexed into MissouriCity; Parkerville remained separate but saw an increase in its population due to increased oil production in nearby Winkler County. As both cities grew more prosperous, they began to attract other businesses such as restaurants and stores surrounding them that could not come to Missouri City because of its restrictive zoning laws. This growth worked against MOCCA's attempts to remain an agricultural center due primarily to its high property taxes which made it difficult for businesses outside those genres to survive without subsidies or government assistance; moreover, many people within MOCCA felt they had been taken advantage of by their larger neighbor while actually having little say over municipal decisions - something that continued until around 2000 when state legislators passed legislation allowing municipalities greater autonomy within themselves without interference from statewide governments (a practice known as 'municipalrariedism'). This change not only helped improveMOCCA's economy but also allowed for new development near downtown while still preserving much of the old district's character - resulting in one of the most revitalized neighborhoods in Houston during this time period. From 1861-1865 the Coast Guardsmen served in various duties around New York Harbor before being deployed to Charleston, South Carolina during the Civil War because of their proximity to Union forces Lines of Defense along both coasts. In 1865 they returned home after Confederate General Robert Ewell's Army retreated from Richmond following their victory at Appomattox Court House. From 1865-1868 these men patrolled off Long Island Sound watching for Confederate vessels attempting to enter through Staten Island or other points southward into America. They also conducted surveillance operations for naval battles between United States warships and fleet units commanded by Spanish Admiral Don Isidro de Gamboa y Urdaneta off Key West Florida in 1866/67; this battle marked Spain's last attempt to invade America since 1794/95! This important mission helped keep America safe from potential aggression by Spain during this difficult period! After the war ended these men continued patrolling off Long Island Sound but now with less need due to advances in technology including submarines! In 1898 Congress appropriated $5 million for new shore batteries along New York Harbor so that patrol boats could be better protected against torpedo attacks! These gunboats became known as "the sloops Hurricane" after those events! In 1941 regulations changed which required all ships manned by coast guard personnel carry lifejackets should anyone fall overboard; this was followed by a requirement that gifts be sent directly from coast guard personnel not individual sailors like before! In 1836, the Republic of Texas was formed from part of Mexico. In 1840, Texas became an independent republic and in 1845, it elected a new government under the Constitution of Texas. The legislature first met in Austin, but moved to Missouri City in 1846 because that was the capital of Mexican Texas. The original town site is now a ghost town. The town was originally called San Antonio de Bexar and was founded by José de Urquiza on November 6, 1791 as a small trading post near present-day Brownsville. It grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes and its strategic position on the Brazos River. By 1800, San Antonio had over 1,500 residents and it boasted two churches and a school. In 1836, when Mexico lost its independence from Spain, Texans declared themselves an independent republic under the Constitution of Texas. On March 6th of that year, San Antonio de Bexar became known as Missouri City after Governor James Kenedy decided to move the capital from Austin to this city because he felt it would be more difficult for Mexican forces to control if they were located in one place than two (Austin andMexico City).
