In 1862, Confederate forces invadedTexasand attacked Union troops at Battle Creek Bridge near present-day Van Vleck Road and Highway 611 (now IH-610). A few months later, Union General Ulysses S Grant marched his army into Kansas through this area and encountered Confederate forces retreating towards Springfield along what is now Van Vleck Road. On July 14th 1863, General Grant ordered Major General Custer to attack these retreating Confederates from flank while other Union troops attacked from behind; this success led to the decisive victory at Little Bighorn which ended Confederate resistance across North America. Although both sides lost many men commanders achieved strategic gains that helped consolidate their power after this catastrophic episode which has been called “the turning point”of American Civil War history – including for African Americans! Once again Crossroads Hardware & Supply opened its doors right on Independence Boulevard just two years later with 125 employees! Here we continued our role as a vital supply depot for soldiers stationed all over America during World War 1 & 2 – always offering quality products at fair prices! With so many important events taking place within our city during those times we remember some very well including: Mayor Holland Jablonski's fight against prohibition; Mr King's famous speech given before Congress denouncing lynching; Miss Congeniality crowned Miss Universe 1913; Daughters Of The American Revolution chapters being established hereabouts; Stonewall Jackson's re-dedication service held HEREIN IN MOCCO CITY on November 22nd 2010 …etc etc etc)
