Mount Pleasant is located in the U.S. state of Texas, in the East Texas region. It is a census-designated place (CDP) and rose to prominence as a center for cattle ranching during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The first settlers to Mount Pleasant were two families from eastern Kentucky, who arrived in 1857. They named their new town after Mount Pleasant in England, where they had been living before travelling eastward. The first post office was established at Mount Pleasant on December 1, 1858, and was operated by Stephen Fenton from his farm until 1861 when he moved to Fort Worth. In 1865, Colonel John Capps organized a cavalry unit called the 4th Cavalry Regiment which garrisoned Waco while Union forces took over the city. General John Buford ordered all Confederate troops out of Waco on July 12, 1865; however, some units remained behind to hold off Union forces until September 9 when they evacuated Waco without having sacked it. In October 1865, Mount Pleasant became a part of Dallas County when it was split between Travis County and Dallas County; it remained within Dallas County until its annexation by Austin in 1901. On February 17, 1915 – one year after Austin became an independent city – Mount Pleasant officially became a city with a population of 122 people within its borders.
