In the early 1800s, Mount Pleasant was a small town in Cooke County, Texas. It was located on the banks of the Brazos River and its residents were farmers and ranchers. The community grewsteadily, and by 1881 it had a post office and two churches. In 1907, Mount Pleasant became part of the new city of Austin, TX. However, due to its small population size, Mount Pleasant did not experience much growth during the first decade after annexation. However, by 1920 when Austin expanded into what is now downtown Austin, there were already numerous businesses and residences in Mountpleasant. With rapid growth came increased development; by 1930 there were five shopping centers within a radius of one-half mile of the town center. During World War II, Mountpleasant became an important military base with many soldiers stationed here including General George Custer who lost his life at Little Bighorn Battlefield in 1898. After the war ended in 1945, people returned to their homes but few businesses survived the pull of high-tech industry which took over during that time period in Central Texas. By 1990 there were only four businesses left in town - three stores and one restaurant - all closed within ten years. But slowly but surely mount pleasant started to come back around as a thriving community with active social clubs and events happening throughout the year. Currently there are efforts being made to revive some aspects of its past while also creating opportunities for future growth through partnerships with other industries like technology or health care based companies
Mount Pleasant was founded by John Wesley Hardin in 1837. The town developed around a cotton gin and slave trade center, and it became an important commercial center during the antebellum period. Mount Pleasant was also the location of the first public school in Texas.
