The Mount Pleasant National Guard was organized on December 5, 1941, in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The unit was made up of Texas and Oklahoma soldiers who had served in World War I and II. The first units were organized at Camp Bowie in Ennis, Texas. The Mount Pleasant National Guard has been stationed throughout the state of Texas since it was created. The unit has been activated for federal duty twice, most recently in 2006 when the military presence was needed following Hurricane Ike. In that year, the unit participated in a major deployment outside Austin to help with rescue efforts after the storm. Mount Pleasant is a small town in the US state of Texas. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in Midland County. The Mount Pleasant post office was founded in 1876 and has been in operation since that time. The history of Mount Pleasant goes back to 1836 when citizens of the small community petitioned the TX Legislature to establish a post office here. A year later, on December 12, 1836, mail arrived from Round Rock with notices that General Santa Anna had invaded Mexico and all mail must be delivered by sea because there were no boats available to transport it inland. The citizens responded by organizing a militia to protect their letter carrier and began delivering letters using wagons instead of horses or oxen. The first store opened in Mount Pleasant on July 6, 1840, just one day after settlers reached the area from New Braunfels and San Antonio. By 1850, Mount Pleasant had become an important center for trade as it served as both a staging ground for wagon trains making their way northward and as a stop on the road between Houston and Galveston. In 1875, residents voted to rename the town "Mount Pleasant" in honor of General James Kountze who had died during the Mexican-American War while leading Union troops against Mexican forces at Monterrey. In 1907, Mtpleasant's only high school announced its closure due to lack of pupils; however, within five years it reopened under new management with more students than ever before. Today, Mtpleasant School District No 4 operates Valley High School which replaced State High School which closed down in 2002 after 40 years of service!

Mount Pleasant was founded in 1857 by Scots-Irish settlers who named it for thepleasant mountain range near their farmstead. The first post office was established in Mount Pleasant on November 15, 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 6, 1861. The first settler to reside in Mount Pleasant was John Sweeny. In 1865, Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in Texas and started a cattle drive that crossed into East Texas from Missouri through what is now Mount Pleasant. Forrest's men were known as "the Panther Men" because they were so fast and strong. In 1868, General Sam Houston purchased about 160 acres (65 hectares) of land east of present day Mount Pleasant from Mr. Alexander Caldwell for $1 per acre ($10 million worth of land at today's prices). This donation became known as the Forrest Ranchland because it lay between Fort Worth and later Dallas/Ft Worth Airport
