Mount Pleasant was founded in 1836 by John Overholt. A post office called Mount Pleasant was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler of Mount Pleasant was James Sitton. In 1840, a school was built on the present site of Mount Pleasant Elementary School. The population of Mount Pleasant increased rapidly during the 1850s, due to the opening of new mines and plantations near the town. In 1870, a Methodist church was built in Mountpleasant. By 1880, the town had about 150 residents and two stores. In 1894, a cotton gin and machine shop were built in Mount pleasant; these were used to process cotton from local farms until 1917 when they were sold to Lumberman's Trust Company for use as their own mills. The community continued to grow slowly through the silent years before World War II brought major social changes that affected everyone living within its limits: agriculture declined as production shifted towards munitions production during World War I; people left for better-paying jobs outside of mountpleasant after Reconstruction; then came World War II which temporarily destroyed much of what had been constructed since 1865 during peacetime times; finally, following American victory over Japan at 1945's Okinawa invasion, many residents returned home while others made adjustments to new lives in postwar America.
