When Mount Pleasant, Texas, was founded in 1879, the town's only law enforcement officer was a policeman named Amos. In 1912, an officer named Harry Smith was hired to serve as the town's first police chief. The position of police chief continued to be held by Harry Smith until his death in 1922. From then on, the job of policing the small town passed down through successive officers until it came into the hands of current Officer Randy Bigham in 1997. Officer Bigham has been with Mount Pleasant Police Department for over 20 years and has played an important role in its history. He is a veteran of the Iraq War and has worked extensively with drug detection and prevention programs. Officer Bigham is also a member of the Mount Pleasant Police Benevolent Association and helps support local businesses. Mount Pleasant's first police car was purchased new from Dallas PD in 1951. Since then, all Mountpleasant officers have received at least one new car. Over time, Mountpleasant Police Department's fleet has included both patrol cars and personal vehicles that can be used for various purposes such as training or defense patrols. In 2007, Officer Bigham became involved with Project Safe Neighborhoods when he co-founded Operation First Responders Withouth Violence (ORDV). This program providesFace-to-face encounters between deputy sheriffs and civilians who are victims of crime in order to prevent future crimes from happening within our community. Alongside this project, Officer Bigham also works on several other initiatives that aim to improve safety for residents of Mount Pleasant including Project Safe Streets which makes buildings more resistant to burglary; DUI Prevention; anti-drug education campaigns; youth intervention programs; and streetlighting projects which help make streets more safe during night hours

The community was named after General David Mount Pleasant who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as governor of Texas. Mount Pleasant was founded by refugees from Cherokee Nation cotton fields who had fled to what is now Texas in 1837 during an Famine that reached all parts of Mexico and North America. This group included many Scots-Irish immigrants who had come overland from Scotland in Search of Opportunity. Most residents were farmers or ranchers until railroads made them prosperous; today there are several businesses such as a bank, auto dealership, grocery store and lumberyard dotting the downtown area which has been known for its annual Bluebonnet Festival since 1911. In 1916 when gas stations became available in town (by then it lay near Waco), most people bought gasoline with their own money rather than going to the nearest station where prices were extortionate by then thanks to oil refineries owned by Standard Oil Company's Texaco subsidiary which controlled local bus lines and other services essential to everyday life without these convenience stores making much profit beyond paying corporate dividends to their owners). Mount Pleasant is a small town in McAllen, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1879 by John Wesley Phelps and his wife, Eliza Jane Phelps. The Phelpses were the first white settlers in what is now McAllen. In 1903, Mount Pleasant had a population of just 150 people. By 1916, it had increased to 1,500 residents. In 1922, Mount Pleasant became an incorporated town with a population of 10,000 people. The population decreased to 6,000 people by 2002 but has since grown again to over 12,000 residents today. The town was named after Mount Pleasant Plantation which was located about two miles east of the present day town site on FM 620 (now US 281). The house where John Wesley Phelps built his home and where he died is still standing today and is called the Phelps House Museum. The plantation also includes a small chapel which remains active today as a place of worship for the community's citizens. In 1879, John Wesley Phelps bought 180 acres near present day McAllen from David Hockaday for $4 per acre ($40 total). He dedicated the land to build what would become known as Mount Pleasant Cemetery - one of only three cemeteries in Texas at that time. At this time there were only five or six families living in Fort Worth and all but one of those families lived within walking distance of their jobs at the fortifications or mills around Fort Worth downtown – so there wasn't much need for burial services other than simple scattering according to death certificates from that era! John Wesley Phelps' daughter Eliza Jane followed her father into farming when she married Hiram Bowen Sr., who owned 160 acres adjacent to their farmstead on Beaver Creek Road northeast of Fort Worth back then too – and started planting wheat on their acacia forested land including building barns and fencing their new home using post-and-beam construction techniques learned from her father! They raised chickens until they moved out onto their larger farmstead around 1900 when Eliza Jane met Jameson Cramer who offered them 20 acres northwest of Ft Worth along Buffalo Bayou (present day IH 35), 320 feet above water level! With this acquisition they began raising cattle until 1906 when they sold all their stock except four black Hereford bulls necessary for Mr Cramer's 23rd birthday Presentation Reception at White Sands Encampment Ballroom which was Saturday October 5th 1906….. Mrs Cramer did some fence work on the ranch while Jameson operated it………. One hundred years later we still have our old post office building right next door!!!
The Mount Pleasant Massacre took place on November 17, 1868, when Confederate soldiers killed nine Union soldiers at a camp called Mount Pleasant in present-day Palestine County, Texas. The massacre was part of the larger Battle of Palestine Creek.
