Murphy, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in Murphy were three families from Illinois who founded the community of Arlington on an abandoned cattle farm in 1875. A post office called Arlington was established in 1877, and became a village in 1907. The name change may have been due to incorporation into Round Rock as a city by then-Mayor James Hogg (1907-21). In 1911, the school board voted to change the name of the town to Murphy because there were already too many towns with similar names around Williamson County. The town's growth began slowly but surely after World War II when businesses began opening up for American soldiers stationed in nearby Austin and San Antonio. The population peaked at 2,500 during the early 1970s before declining sharply after that decade's oil recession brought about economic decline and joblessness. By 2000, Murphy had shrunk to less than 1,000 residents. However, since then things have begun to improve; recent census data shows that the population has grown back by over 10%. Today's economy revolves around tourism which contributes significantly to Murphy's economy as well as its overall quality of life. One major attraction for tourists is Dripping Springs which remains one of the most captivating spots within minutes' drive of downtown Murphy; it also offers stunning views across Clear Fork River valley and Guadalupe Mountains National Park just outside of town limits - making it perfect for photo ops! It was named for John Murphy, an early settler and one of the first white men to reach the area. The first school in Murphy was built in 1892 by Mrs. Clements and Mrs. Jenson. A new school was built in 1906 by Judge Waugh and Mr. Whitehurst, who also built the first store and mill in the town. The townspeople pooled their money to build a sawmill which began operations in 1908. The mill continued operation until it went out of business in 1922; however, it has been preserved as part of the Murphy Historical District since then. In 1927, President Coolidge established US Route 66 through Hood County and Murphy became one of its original stops along its route. In 1976, Congress designated Murphy as a National Historic Site due to its role as an important junction on US 66 during this time period
