The first Europeans to visit what is now Nacogdoches were Spanish missionaries in 1736. They named it San Nicolas de los Ranchos de la Grita (St. Nicholas Ranch), but by 1821 they had renamed it Nacogdoches after their patron saint, Nicholas of Nursia. In 1835 the Mexican government ceded this territory to the United States as part of a treaty ending the Mexican-American War. The U.S. built Fort Stockton here in 1845 and began garrisoning American soldiers here until 1895 when Mexico ceded all Veracruz County including Nacogdoches back to America under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo). In 1898, during World War I, American forces built Camp Bowie near present day Nacogdoches to house 1,500 military personnel and supplies like ammunition and food for troops on maneuvers around Lubbock and Midland Counties north of Dallas . During World War II German troops took refuge along the banks of Buffalo Bayou in what is now Wichita Falls before surrendering on April 9 1945 following days of bombardment from Allied forces led by General George Patton's Third Army Headquarters at nearby Eagle Pass Bridge over Buffalo Bayou which opened up an escape route for them

Nacogdoches County was first organized in 1836. The county seat was Nacogdoches, and the original courthouse was built on the current site of the Texas State Fairgrounds. In 1871, Nacogdoches became a part of Webb County. In 1907, Webb County became an independent county and Nacogdoches County ceased to exist. In 1934, Nacogdoches County formed a new government with a mayor-council form of government. On January 1, 1935, all local governments in Webb County were combined into one government under the name of Nacogdoches Consolidated Government. The old courthouse at Parkland Boulevard and Long Street burned down on November 16, 1936; however, the new courthouse was completed and opened on December 6th. Today, Nacogdoches is home to many businesses including banks, restaurants and stores. The population has grown steadily over the years as people have moved here for its natural resources such as oilfields and water rights. There are also several universities located in this small town: East Texas State University (ETSU), Baylor University (BU), Rice University (Rice) and Dallas Baptist University (DBA).
