The Dutch word “Nederland” means “home.” The town of Nederland, Texas was named for the country and its capital, Amsterdam. In 1836, when the Republic of Texas was created, Nederland became its capital. The town thrived during the early days of the republic because it was near the important military base at Fort Richardson. It also benefited from a trade route that linked Houston with Santa Fe and Mexico City. In 1912, Nederland merged with neighboring towns to form a new city called Austin. As Austin grew, so too did its need for jobs and businesses. In 1916, Nederland started construction on what would become one of America’s largest shopping malls. The mall quickly became a popular tourist destination and is still in use today. Today, Nederland is an important community in itself and has played an active role in many aspects of local life. Its libraries provide access to a wide variety of materials as well as opportunities for learning about Dutch culture and history. The National Guard is a national reserve force of the United States. It was initially constituted as an all-volunteer militia in 1792, and became a full-time military service in 1802. The National Guard currently numbers over 162,000 Soldiers and Sailors from across the United States. National Guard History: It Came to Be On July 4th, 1792, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution calling for an organization of “all men over eighteen years of age who are fit for military service” into one body called the Militia Bureau or “Guardian Corps”. The original members were men who had volunteered to serve in the Patriot War against Great Britain. Eventually, this body would grow to include militiamen from all over America. In 1800, Congress created an Inspector General within the Militia Bureau to manage and operate it efficiently. This first militia was made up mostly of farmers and their families who responded to President George Washington’s call for assistance during the American Revolution. By 1802, when John Cranch became Director of Militia Bureau, there were nearly 30,000 Guardsmen serving throughout America with 1 infantry regiment (the 3rd U.S.) stationed in New York City at Fort Greene on Staten Island; 2 artillery battalions (1st U.S.), commanded by Maj.-Gen James Wilkinson; 1 cavalry squadron commanded by Col. Richard Montgomery; 8 companies of riflemen (4th U.S.), under Captains Nathaniel Hawthorne and Israel Putnam; 2 machine gun companies (3rd U S), commanded by Brigadier General James Winchester; 5 field artillery batteries (2nd Maine), led by Brigadier General David Dixon Porterfield; 10 company nurses (5th U S), under Mrs Elizabeth Donelson); 6 officers cadets from various states’ Military Academys (Delaware Infantry Regiment – Philadelphia Cadet Commandery – Connecticut Troops – Rhode Island Cadet Commandery – Virginia Cadet Commandery). Nederland is a town in Coryell County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Nederland were Quakers who came from Pennsylvania in 1827. They built a small cabin on the east side of the river and named it after their home country, Netherlands. After some time they started trading goods with other settlers and by 1840 they had a store and blacksmith shop. A post office was established in 1845 and soon there were several families living here. In 1853 a wagon road leading north from Amarillo to Fort Worth was built and many local farmers used it for shipping supplies and transporting people and goods overland. By 1870 there were five stores, two churches, four schools, one jail (later converted into an hotel), four mills (two of which still operate), two churches, twentyfive households, six farms, three residences (all single-family homes) and one carrier pigeon station (). In 1880 Nederland had eleven stores including two banks (), one grocery store (), one barber shop (), three restaurants (), seventeen dwellings (), ten businesses () and fifty-four workers (). Many residents departed during the turn of the century for better opportunities elsewhere or because of World War I shortages that led to declines in farmland values (). However, some returned after war ended as oil boomed (). In 1924 Nederland had twelve businesses (), thirty-one dwellings (), seventy-six workers () but no bank(). Only five years later did all but nine businesses go out of business (−30% loss) due to changes in how oil was being leased (); however residential neighborhoods began popping up around town without any formal planning or zoning approvals so development rapidly exploded (). Today there are over 200 residences () within walking distance of downtown core with more planned growth set for future rounds; additionally there are numerous professional services such as architecture (& engineering), law enforcement (+1Police Department since 2016), healthcare (+2 hospitals since 2018), research & development (+3 startups since 2018) as well as retail options like clothing boutiques (.com/naderlands.) revitalization efforts have brought new life back to this once struggling community while preserving its unique character.;
The name of the city, Nederland, Texas was given to it by the Dutch in 1736. It was founded by the Houston family in 1837 as a trading post on the present day Texan-Mexico border. The city grew rapidly due to its location and commerce, and by 1840 it had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1845, Nederland became an independent republic under the leadership of Baron Friedrich von Soden. The city experienced rapid development during this time and soon became one of the most important commercial hubs on the continent. In 1862, Nederland joined Mexico as part of its Adams–Onís Treaty delimiting Mexican territory east of San Antonio River. After independence was granted to Texas in 1867, Nederland reverted back to Dutch rule until 1915 when it was added to the United States as part of Dallas County.
