The Dutch navy played a significant role in the development of Texas and its people. The first European to visit Texas was Juan de la Faja, captain of the Spanish vessel San Salvador on October 12, 1535. La Faja explored the area that is now Austin and he built a small fort on what is now Hermann Park in what is now Plano. In 1607, Conchita Alonso de Montoya y Salcedo founded the First Dutch Mission Church in San Antonio. In 1713, Captain Hendrick Corliss discovered oil reserves near Corpus Christi and decided to develop them into a commercial enterprise. The first well was drilled by Hendrick Corliss and John Workman on November 6, 1713. On December 13, 1715, Captain Nicholas Vereeniging reported finding more oil at Refugio Bayou. This led to an increasing demand for naval supplies from both Spain and England because of their then-booming colonies in North America. By 1800, the Dutch navy had become one of the most important fleets operating in Europe with over 200 vessels stationed throughout the world. On January 1, 1836, Commodore James Kenedy wrote letters patent authorizing Texas annexation as part of Mexico's newly formed Republic under President Vicente Guerrero. On February 14th, 1836 Commander Alfred Denton authorized Rear Admiral John Biddle to lead an expedition against Texan forces at Nacogdoches Creek Bridge near present day Odessa (now Midland). After successful engagements at Nacogdoches Creek Bridge and Guadalupe Hill Station northeast of Odessa on March 24th1836 Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all possible American troops must retreat back into Mexico City due to Ulysses S Grant's invasion of Mexico two days earlier that same month known as "The Teatro del Pueblo" or "The Theater of the People". Nederland, Texas history begins with the arrival of Dutch settlers in 1636. The area was part of the Spanish Empire at the time, and as a result the Dutch were not allowed to bring any plants or animals over by themselves. So they had to trade with other nations in order to get what they wanted. One of these trading posts was Fort San Marcos, located on a small island near present-day Midway Island. The fort served as a military outpost for years until it was destroyed by an American attack in 1836. With Fort San Marcos gone, the Netherlands lost access to most of their resources and their population began to dwindle. By 1840 only about 20 people lived in Nederland, Texas. However, there continued to be some Dutch traders active here until 1872 when all trade stopped due to American expansionism. The first Europeans who settled in what is now Nederland arrived from Holland around 1636 under the leadership of Hendrik Maurits van Rensselaer. Van Rensselaer decided to settle his new colony close to Mexico City so he could sell goods back into Holland and avoid being taxed heavily by Spain. He named his new settlement "Netherlands" after his homeland and set up shop on an uninhabited island near present-day Midway Island (later known as Midway Atoll). He got help from local natives in order to build a rudimentary hut which he later used as his home while he waited for more suitable land elsewhere within Mexico City's boundaries. By 1642 there were about 25Dutch colonists living in Netherland; however, due mainlyto Lowcountry Indians’ raiding raids into Mexican territoryfrom nearby Louisiana andTexas during this period many colonists died from disease contracted during these adventures." In 1702 Captain James Cook discovered Vancouver Island off Northwest Canada while sailing through the Bering Sea on his third voyage circumnavigating Earth (the first Englishman everto do so).
