Odessa, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles (40 km) south of Corpus Christi and about 30 miles (48 km) north of San Antonio. The population was 4,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Odessa were Spanish traders in 1541 when they set up a post on an island in the bayou for trade with Native Americans. In 1836, Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna besieged and captured Odessa after a series of unsuccessful attempts by American Commodore John Cushing to capture it during his expedition against Mexico's southern army under Don Carlos Mesa. Mexicans then built Fort Worth on Bayou Houston between Odessa and Harlingen for their own use as an arsenal and garrison before withdrawing further west into Texcoco territory in 1837-38. In 1840, Englishman George Brown founded what would become Brown Brothers Tobacco Company here based on his original investment in land near present-day Midtown Houston that had been granted by Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena to him as recompense for his participation in the Texian War of 1835-36 which resulted in Mexico's formal annexation of Texas as part of its new nationhood including New Mexico and Arizona. From this point forward, development here was strictly commercial with no regard for natural resources or history; only later did some residential subdivisions start developing around major business districts such as downtownHouston or MidtownHouston while others developed around smaller rural townships close to agricultural centers like Mission Bend (now Spring Branch), White Sands, Longview Farms, Clearwater Beach Resort & Marina etc., providing access to larger industrial areas outside Houston proper such as Deer Park & Montrose Center near Pasadena and Clearlake Ranch just east of League City along IH 35W between Abilene & Midland Counties; all developments ceased abruptly when oil production began earnestly expanding throughout much portions OF Texas following World War II due mainly to federal laws mandating large infrastructure projects like interstate highways

Odessa, Texas is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 544 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. Odessa was founded in 1873 by settlers from Russia and named for the Russian city of Odessa. The townsite that now includes Odessa was plotted on February 15, 1873, by Rear Admiral John J. Dahlgren during his visit to Midland County as part of his survey of land for the United States Navy's new base at Galveston Island. Dahlgren believed that with a proper name and location, Odessa would become an important center for naval activities on Galveston Island and throughoutTexas Gulf Coast region. The name "Odessa" was selected because it sounded like the language spoken by some Russian traders who had been in the area when he made his original suggestion for the site. The first post office in Odessa opened on March 6, 1874; it was renamed toMidland City on November 11, 1875. In 1905,Midland City merged with neighboring Seaworld City to form what is now known as Midland County headquarters complex (now Brown Field). On January 1, 1907, Midland City became its own incorporated municipality under General Order No 2-A of Mayor John Waddell; it reverted back to its original name upon incorporation into Midland County effective July 1st following passage of General Order No 8-B which re-designated all municipalities withinthe county as "municipalities". In 1928 local hero Harry Hines set up a softball diamond just east of downtown Odessa playing against teams from other nearby towns such as Victoria and San Antonio; this led to Hines' nickname "The Big Blue Bomber." In 1876, Odessa joined forces with Bexar County to form a new county called Bexar County Annexed odessa Co., Texas (later renamed Travis County). The town continued to grow and prosper even after becoming part of what is now Austin County. In 1907, Odessa became an incorporated municipality and soon grew into one of the largest cities in Texas.
