Palestine was then a small town located near Laredo, Texas. The first Palestinian Arab School in Houston opened in 1916. In 1948, following theIsraeli-Arab war, many Palestinians living in Houston were forced to flee their homes as part of Operation Defensive Shield. Many of these refugees found refuge within the United States and founded communities there. In 1961, a group of Palestinians from Palestine who had relocated to Dallas formed an organization called “Palestinian Citizens” Incorporated with the goal of providing social services and advocacy for their people. They also developed a mosque which served as a center for cultural and religious activities for both Arabs and Muslims living in Dallas. In 1978, after more than 50 years of peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians, riots broke out between Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem (the future capital of Israel) and Israeli soldiers stationed there. The violence lasted several days and resulted in dozens dead including children; however, no injuries were reported among Israelis present or participants. This event was considered one of the deadliest incidents during peace negotiations that followed three decades of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians2 . Following this trauma, many members of the Palestinian Community turned towards activism to support their cause – eventually culminating with establishment of PA offices inside DFW Airport on November 15th 19903 .
