He named the community after his father-in-law—Jacinto Potano y Baca—who had been killed during a skirmish near Carrizo Springs two years earlier. Potano had journeyed from Mexico City to visit his brother-in-law and cousin Josefina de Urrea at Palestine Creek before setting off on his return trip to Mexico City on July 3rd. The original settlers were men from present day New Mexico and Colorado Territory; however, only about fifty residents lived there when Urias first arrived. By 1840, however, Palestine had become a thriving center for cattle ranching and farming operations due to its location along Trinity River near what is now Midtown Houston. In 1845–46 Urias built what would eventually become known as "The White House" as his home base for governing his settlement; he also used it as an office for shipping papers and other documents between Houston and Arabia del Norte (present day Albuquerque). In 1848–49 Urias' son Manuel moved to Palestine from San Francisco with his wife Catarina Sáenz de Urrea y Alvarado; they became the first Hispanic families to live here permanently after leaving their native Spain for reasons unknown. What began as a small farming village quickly grew into one of Texas’s most successful agricultural towns throughout the 19th century; even today portions of Palestrina are still lush with crops that have been grown there since then including cotton, cornmeal breadfruit trees (a type of palm), watermelon, mangos (mango trees), squash blossoms (palestine flowers), figs (fig trees), olive oil palms (olive tree plantations) and several thousand acres of rice acreage irrigated with artificial ditches systems dating back to the early 1900s!
