Paris, Texas is a town located in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The Paris post office was established in 1868 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1909, the first school opened in Paris and continued operations until it closed in 1963. The Paris Independent School District served the town from 1868 to 1963. In 1865, Frenchman John Fenton donated land for what would become Paris Township. The community was named after France because of its large number of refugees who had fled warring sections of France during the American Civil War. French settlers were instrumental in developing Paris Township and built many homes and churches there. By 1870, most of the French Canadians living in Paris had moved out following political changes that year that increased representation for Anglo-Saxon residents in Cameron County government structures. In 1907, French Canadian entrepreneur Jules Lafontaine erected a small lumberyard on his property southwest of downtown Paris on Austin Rd., which became known as Lafontaine's Lumberyard #1 due to its early success). This sawmill operated until 1972 when it was closed by Lafontaine's heirs after he lost money on investments; however, some evidence suggests that Lafontaine may have still earned royalties from sales at his old mill site to this day (see below). From 1912 to 1914, Louis Sénateur leased an acre (less than 1/4 square mile) near present day IH 35 and Loop 610 South for use as a livestock farm which he called "the Grapes". Mr. Sénateur later donated this parcel to local farmers for industrial purposes; however, no further information about this parcel has been found since 1964 despite numerous requests from historians throughout Cameron County There are several theories about why Mr .Sénateur never developed or used this land: possible concerns over competition from larger ranching operations or concerns about contamination from agricultural runoff caused by nearby Interstate Highway 10; however no definitive proof exists to support any specific theory Additionally, other parcels adjacent to current day IH 35 also contain potential commercial uses includingsite designated for a future Walmart development project but no such plans have yet been approved or proceed
