The history of the National Guard in Paris, Texas can be traced back to 1871. The first units were organized at Camp Bowie, a military reservation in present-day San Antonio, and raised under the command of Captain John S. Campbell. The camp was reestablished in 1875 as Fort Sam Houston National Military Park, and it served as the initial home for the 1st Infantry Regiment of Texas Volunteers (1st Infantry Brigade), which arrived from Colorado on September 3, 1870. On July 15, 1881, President Ulysses S. Grant signed an act authorizing the erection of a national guard regiment at Austin with headquarters at Brownsville. On October 24 that year, 1st Infantry Regiment became part of 4th United States Infantry Brigade (4th United States Infantry Division). That brigade was redesignated 9th United States Infantry Regiment on December 12 and simultaneously activated at Fort Worth as part of 4th Divisional Army Corps Reserve Commanded by Major General Philip Sheridan. In 1915 the regiment's name was changed to 8th Cavalry Regiment and then again to 1st Cavalry Regiment on February 11, 1916 when it was combined with 5th Cavalry Battalion to form 3rd Cavalry Brigade under command of Colonel James Wacoal. In 1942 artillery battalions were reorganized into companies; these battalion organizations are still used today within the National Guard forces in France. The regiment also became responsible for infantry training throughout its history until 1957 when all infantry regiments were reassigned to cavalry divisions or army corps reserve commands once they had been fully equipped with modern firearms and armor systems. In 1975 1st Cavalry Regiment disbanded while remaining inactive but its constituent companies continued their activities until 1987 when they rejoined their former regimental organization with Headquarters Company now headquartered at Fredericksburg Barracks in Fredericksburg County outside Richmond City Limits along Interstate 10 East coast side approximately 20 miles south west from downtown Austin Texas without ever having left their original deployment site since 1898!

The Paris, Texas National Guard was organized on November 15, 1861. The first unit was the 9th Texas Infantry Regiment. The unit was mobilized on December 3, 1861 and mustered in at Beaumont, Texas. The regiment fought in the American Civil War from 1861-1865. In 1865, the 9th Texas Infantry Regiment was consolidated with the 8th Texas Infantry Regiment to form the 1st Battalion of the Paris Guards District (later redesignated as 1st Squadron of Texan Guards). On October 2nd 1866, Headquarters Company moved to San Antonio and Battery A became Company F of 1st Squadron of Texan Guards. The battalion served in southwestern Mexico during peace time and then returned home in 1885 to active duty again until disbanding on January 15th 1889.

By 1900, there were five general stores, two churches (one Presbyterian), six schools (including one high school) and twelve businesses including eleven farming enterprises.
