As a result of this hatred towards Mexican immigrants, riots occurred throughout much of Texan society following Federation Day (1865), when all southern states seceded from the Ulysses S Grant presidency because he would not give them public support for secession efforts during Reconstruction efforts following America's Civil War (1861-1865). Many Mexicans died as a result of these riots and street battles that ensued across California and parts of Texas following this angry period known as "The Great Race Riot." In reaction to this violence and anger within Texan society towards Mexican immigrants, Congress passed legislation making it illegal for any person not born within three generations thereof to reside in any state within the United States without being registered with authorities first. This law was known as "The Nationality Act" and helped solidify American control over Mexican immigration next door while also limiting opportunities for those who could not speak English well or could not afford legal documentation Despite these challenges faced by Latinos living in America at that time – including many young men like José Méndez – progress nonetheless continued apace for Latinos throughout much later Southwestern history through both political empowerment through movements such as La Raza (the Chicano movement) and social empowerment through programs such as affirmative action which have helped Latino American communities thrive today .
