Pearland is a town in Waller County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,827 at the 2010 census. Pearland is located on the north bank of the Gulf of Mexico near the mouth of the Brazos River. It was founded by Texans in 1836 as a small community on land that would become part of Austin. In 1892, Pearland became part of Houston and incorporated as a city. Since its incorporation as a city, Pearland has undergone many changes; it has lost its streetcar service and now relies largely upon Highway 6 for transportation. The economy in Pearland is based chiefly on agriculture and manufacturing. Poultry and cattle are the mainstay industries here while retail sales account for most of the remainder of the local economy. The history of Pearland can be traced back to 1836 when Texans arrived in what would become Waller County looking for new land to settle after being driven out by Native Americans. The men who participated in this venture were Captain James Fenton and Lieutenant William Brownell (now buried at Cedar Creek Cemetery). They named their new community "New Braunfels" after George Washington's original home near present-day Georgetown, Virginia. Many other early settlers followed suit before 1840 when Waller County was organized into districts; one district encompassed all present-day Waller County except for portions east of Brazoria Street which were included within Galveston County until 1883 when they were transferred to Houston with its annexation into that county The first house built in what would become Pearland was erected about december 1st ,1836 by Capt James Fenton . Pearland was founded in 1879 by James W. Pearland and his brother, John. The pearling business became successful, and the Pearlands built a home on a bluff overlooking the Brazos River. In 1902, they erected the first courthouse in Texas. The pearling industry declined after World War I, but the Pearlands continued to operate a bakery and grocery store until their death in 1957.
