Located on State Street near Pike Place Market, the shop quickly became a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Kane's began operations as a small mom-and-pop business. Owner and founder Jim Kane had little interest in selling coffee beans and instead focused on providing an excellent cup of Joe. To this day, Kane's remains one of the most popular businesses in town for its delicious coffee and friendly atmosphere. In 1993, Jim Kane passed away suddenly after many years of ownership and operation at his store. His legacy lived on through his son Johnathan Kane, who continued to run the business until 2003 when it was purchased by David Myers Jr. David Myers Sr., who also ran The Seattle Times' morning news desk from 1988 until his retirement in 2003, served as head brewer from 2006 until his death in 2013.
