The Coast Guard gift history in Pflugerville, Texas begins with the establishment of the Coast Guard in 1915. At that time, it was necessary for law enforcement officials to have a means of transportation and response when patrolling the coastline. The Coast Guard began purchasing boats in 1916 and by 1929 had purchased over thirty-five vessels. In 1945, the Coast Guard established its first station at Pflugerville. That same year, the United States Congress created the Presidential Commission on Marine Safety to study coastal safety issues. The commission recommended that the Coast Guard purchase additional vessels and establish a coast guard station at Pflugerville. The president followed through with this recommendation and on January 3, 1946, President Harry Truman signed into law Public Law 89-651 which directed the Coast Guard to purchase two submarines and four patrol boats. The first submarines were delivered to service in 1947 and Patrol Boat 1 was commissioned on February 8th of that year. By 1949, all six boats had been acquired and served along Texas' seacoast until they were withdrawn from service in 1973 as part of an effort to save money during difficult economic times. In 1972, when it became apparent that no new submarine projects would be undertaken by either agency due to budget limitations, all six boats were reactivated as Service Vessels (SSV) #2-6 at Fort Worth WWTP where they remain today Museum Attraction Operated (MARINE MUSEUM OPPORTUNITY).
