The next year, the city donated $10,000 towards the purchase of two F-86 Sabre jet fighters for the Air Force's elite fighter squadron - The Blue Angels. These planes were delivered in 1959 and 1960. In 1961, the AFB gifted a Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol plane to the City of Plano as part of their military donation program. From 1965 through 1969, AFB gave out educational materials such as model airplanes and helicopters to local schools across Texas as part of their "Gift giving Program" (later renamed " USAF Military Education Grants"). In 1970, they presented a Piper PA-38A Super Cub helicopter to Mayor John Fahey for use by his departmental police force -the Plano Police Department became one of only three agencies nationwide that received this type of helicopter at that time! In 1973, AFB gifted two Cessna 172s (one for humanities studies and one for technology) to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Colorado; this was followed by another pair in 1974! On July 15th 1975 - just four days after being elected president - Richard Nixon presented an Aeronautical Research Laboratory Tupolev Tu-144 MSN 5563 (serial number 97-0112) on behalf of General Curtis LeMay at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma Washington during a USAF/NASA joint research program flight! This was beginning what would be known as Project Snowbird which lasted until 1978!
