Plano was founded on November 3, 1836, by John D. Rockefeller and his partners in the oil business. The town grew rapidly, and by 1845 it boasted a population of about 10,000 people. It was named after the Dakota Territory where most of the oil reserves were found. In 1901, Plano became a city with a population of over 50,000 people. In 1968, Plano annexed the adjacent towns of Flower Mound and Richardson to its boundaries. The annexation created a new municipality with an estimated population of 100,000 people as well as an area of over 120 square miles (291 square kilometers). The history of Plano begins with Robertsons who arrived in 1836 to start what would become one of the largest oil businesses in America. John D.'s grandfather had migrated from Scotland and began working for George Robertson in Oil Creek County near Aberdeen, Kansas Territory in 1827-28. When George died in 1840 he bequeathed his entire interest in oil production to his son John D., Jr., who also inherited some land east of Wichita Falls that had been donated by Judge Wm H335 Stroud and others for what would become Wichita Falls College (later Baylor University). This grant enabled John D., Jr., to build up his father's interests quickly into what eventually became one of the largest oil companies in America - Standard Oil Company (NYSE: SODA) - which operated out OFTCoke Street between Market Street and Houston Street from 1870 until 1910 when it merged into RJR Nabisco Corporation (NYSE: RJR) . These early years are best known for Standard Oil's purchase - through DuPont & Co.(NYSE: DD&P) -of Chattanooga Gas Light Company Oriental Petroleum Company assets at $16 million on May 14th, 1870 which made Tennessee the world's first "gas light nation."
