The United States Armed Forces have a rich history in Port Neches, Texas. The city was named for General Zachary Taylor, the first U.S. President to be impeached and removed from office by the House of Representatives. In 1892, Congress passed a law authorizing soldiers stationed at Fort Worth and other local posts to form companies known as “the volunteer infantry battalion” (later renamed the Ulysses S Grant Infantry Regiment). This mobilization helped spur economic development in Port Neches and throughout Harris County which would continue until World War II. During World War I, Fort Worth was again called upon to provide protection for cattle drives heading north fromtexas. The fort's cannons also played a critical role in repelling German invaders during that war (although not without some casualties). After World War I ended, Fort Worth's Armistice agreement placed responsibility for defense of Central Texas with Austin Municipal Airport instead of with Fort Worth (though Ft Worth still enjoyed some privileges such as being able to fire cannonballs out of their parade ground). In 1927, after years of planning and construction funding had been allocated by Congress under then-Secretary of Defense James Forrestal, USS Constitution Museum opened its doors to visitors at Brownsville Naval Shipyard on Corpus Christi Bayou near downtownPort Neches! During World War II, many residents worked on Project Paperclip which helped bring over hundreds of talented European Jews to America during the war years. Some of these immigrants later moved to Houston while others decided to stay in Port Neches where they formed their own community known as "The Hebrew Riviera." The Jewish community continued to grow throughout the 1960s and 1970s when antisemitic sentiment increased across America following Star-of-David placards being found throughout several American universities
