This unit was activated on September 2, 1942 and served as part of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. The wing flew combat missions against Nazi Germany until December 1945. During the Korean War, Ninth Air Force supported American ground forces by flying reconnaissance aircraft over North Korea. In April 1951, they were redesignated as Twelfth Air Division and assigned to Eighth Army under Lieutenant General Walton H. Harris Jr.. They flew bombing missions against targets inside North Korea until October 1953 when they were transferred back to Eighth Army and reassigned to support United Nations forces fighting in South Korea. Inactivated on February 15, 1955 at Portland AFB after its members were absorbed into the newly created USAF Continental Command Headquarters staff squadron structure
