Red Oak, Texas is a small town located in the Tarrant County region of Texas. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth- Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Red Oak was James Maynard who arrived in 1837. He and his family founded what is now the Maynard Agricultural Company near present day FM 431 and US 281. The Maynard Agricultural Company became one of the largest landowners in Red Oak Township, with a farm that extended from FM 431 to I-30W and included land east of US 281 and west of FM 1526. In 1845, John Fenton erected a cabin on current day LOT 548 (now SE corner lot 548) which served as the nucleus for what would become the town of RedOak. In 1893, when Fort Worth annexed Tarrant County, Red Oak became part of that county's new municipality and continued to serve as its municipal center until 1915 when it reverted back to its original name."

The Town of Red Oak was founded on November 12, 1881 by John Hinton and others who were settlers in what is now Liberty County. The first post office was established in Red Oak on October 15, 1882. In 1907, Red Oak became a city when it amalgamated with neighboring Arlington. In 1916, Arlington merged with Blackwell to form Baker City. In 1932, Red Oak again amalgamated with Blackwell to become Red Oak–Blairville. On December 1, 1935, Blairville merged with Abilene to form Amarillo. On May 14, 1938 an oil well called "McNeely", located about northeast of town on county road SH-11-A (now FM 1960), caused a large fire that burned for days and destroyed more than 40 homes and businesses near the well site

The townsite was founded in 1845 by Nicholas Hogg, who named it for the red oak trees that grew around his home. In 1868, Red Oak became a county seat and remained so until 1907 when it became a part of Tarrant County. Red Oak has experienced many different types of growth over the years. It was originally primarily agricultural but eventually saw a boom in manufacturing due to its proximity to other large cities in north-central Texas. Today, Red Oak is known for its antique shopping and as the home to the only full-scale replica of an American Civil War battlefield outside of Atlanta, Georgia
