Red Oak is a small town located in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio-Bryan-Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Red Oak were Spanish colonists in 1539. The Dutch Settlers arrived in 1607 and named it "Overholt". A post office was established in 1846 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1848, William Hogg founded the Hogg Oil Company here. He also developed land northwest of Red Oak for agricultural purposes. In 1865, Houston businessman Sam Houston purchased about half of the oil businesses of William Hogg and began developing it into an integrated city and oil center known as TX City Limits. The community's first school was built on a parcel donated by Mrs. Fannie Barnes in 1868; it became known as Barnes School District No 1A soon after. The first garage opened here in 1907; the present one was built east of town near Loop 288 just south of IH-10 on what are now Loop 410 Road (former US 281). In 1911, Red Oak hosted its first rodeo event which attracted over 100 participants from all over South Texas including Dallas, Plano, Arlington Heights and Fort Worth; that year $2 million worth of goods were generated by this type of event alone according to local newspapers at that time! Today’s rodeo industry has grown significantly with events taking place all around the world – many featuring top stars from America’s rodeo circuit!
