Red Oak is a town in San Marcos County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Red Oak is located on US 281 and FM 1488. The town was founded in 1881 by John Hogg and his family as a small community of log cabins near the mouth of the Rio Grande. The name came from an oak tree that grew next to their home. In 1907, Red Oak became a municipal city with its own government and school district. In 1925, Red Oak annexed parts of La Vernia to become its second largest city. The annexation caused controversy because La Vernia had always been part oftxDenton County while Red Oak was part of San Marcos County. In 1932, Red Oak annexed portions of Slaughterhouse but this annexation did not cause any problems because Slaughterhouse had always been a rural community east of I-35W and west of FM 1488. In 1951, White Sands Missile Range opened in nearby Seaworld Park which led to an increase in business for the town's merchants and farmers trying to get access to the new range. In 1955, both towns merged into one municipality under Mayor Dewey Latham due to lack of local leadership at that time. In 1959, after years of planning and construction by Mayor Latham's predecessor Bud Walton Jr., Interstate 10 was built through downtown Dallas cutting off much needed commercial growth in Red Oaks while it created thousands more jobs downtown creating what would later be called "the red light district". This development locally killed off much other downtown business activity until new businesses started popping up all around downtown Dallas when I-10opened again in 2005! After years without major economic development happening within our borders we were finally blessed with some good news late last year when billionaire/local resident Bud Walton Jr announced he was opening up his own shopping center just outside our limits called "Walton Manor" should bring some much needed life back into our once struggling Downtown Crossing! After months long buildup Walnut Creek Mall has now reopened after being closed for several years following many extensions & repairs!!
