The Trinity River provided enough flow so that people could grow crops and fish while also constructing roads and other infrastructure necessary for success. The community played an important role during World War II because it was one of three towns within miles of Dallas that permitted military personnel to live without fear of being drafted into combat. In addition, Red Oak served as headquarters for several anti-aircraft batteries stationed here during wartime. Red Oak experienced some tough times between 1980 and 1990 due to economic recessionary conditions throughout much of America; however, since then its economy has become more diversified thanks in part to increased tourism opportunities along with increasing job opportunities across all industries statewide including technology companies such as Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Googleplex Inc., Microsoft Corp., Twitter Co., Amazon Web Services llc., Johnson & Johnson JNJ.) Red Oak was founded in 1836 by Major General James Fannin and his wife, Maria. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Red River, which led to a number of businesses being established in Red Oak. In 1839, the first post office was opened in Red Oak. By 1840, the town had a population of around 100 people. In 1865, Red Oak became an incorporated municipality. The city's growth continued until the early 1920s when it peaked with a population of around 300 people. However, during the Great Depression,Red Oak's economy collapsed and its population dwindled to just 50 residents by 1933.
